Titles & Paperwork

Rebuilt Title Cars in Oregon: What You Need to Know Before You Buy

Oregon allows rebuilt title vehicles to be registered and driven legally — but there are things every buyer should understand before signing the paperwork. Here's what we tell every customer who asks about salvage or rebuilt title cars.

What Is a Rebuilt Title?

A rebuilt title (also called a reconstructed title in Oregon) means the vehicle was previously declared a total loss by an insurance company, then repaired and re-inspected to be roadworthy again. The damage could have been from a collision, flood, fire, or theft recovery. Once repaired and passed inspection, it gets a "Salvage — Rebuilt" notation on the title.

Is It Safe to Buy?

It depends on the repair quality and the nature of the original damage. Here's what we recommend:

  • Always get a pre-purchase inspection from an independent mechanic
  • Ask for photos of the damage and repair receipts if available
  • Review the CarFax or AutoCheck report carefully
  • Avoid flood-damaged vehicles — electrical issues can surface years later

The Trade-Off: Price vs. Risk

Rebuilt title vehicles typically sell for 20–40% below clean title market value. For buyers who do their homework, this can be excellent value. For buyers who skip inspection — it can be a costly mistake. At C&K, we always disclose title status upfront and provide CarFax with every vehicle.

Insurance & Financing

Most major insurers will cover rebuilt title vehicles for liability and collision, but some may decline comprehensive coverage. Financing can be trickier — many banks won't lend on rebuilt titles, so be prepared to pay cash or work with a credit union that's flexible.

Buying a Used Car: The Short Version

Always Do These

  • • Run a CarFax or AutoCheck before buying
  • • Get an independent inspection ($100–150, worth every cent)
  • • Test drive on the highway, not just the parking lot
  • • Check for rust underneath (especially Pacific NW vehicles)
  • • Verify the VIN on the dashboard matches the title

Red Flags to Watch For

  • • Seller won't let you take it to a mechanic
  • • Price is drastically below market value
  • • Title is "not in hand" or has a lien on it
  • • Mismatched paint panels (sign of hidden body work)
  • • Musty smell inside (flood damage indicator)

Payment Tips

  • • Cash, cashier's check, or Zelle are cleanest
  • • Never pay before seeing the vehicle in person
  • • If financing through a credit union, get pre-approved first
  • • Budget for registration, taxes, and insurance on top of price

Oregon Title Transfer

  • • Title must be transferred within 30 days in Oregon
  • • Both buyer and seller sign the back of the title
  • • Take title + bill of sale to any DMV office or title company
  • • Dealer sales: the dealer handles title work for you
